Fitbod vs ChatGPT: Is Fitbod Worth $15.99 a Month?

Key takeaways

  • Fitbod costs $15.99 a month or $95.99 a year after a 7-day trial, verified 2026-10-03 on Fitbod's FAQ, help center and web checkout.
  • Over 36 months that is $575.64 paid monthly or $287.97 on the yearly plan. Trunk+ with an assistant you already have is $9.99 for the same period.
  • Fitbod has no free tier for logging. After the 7-day trial, logging a new workout requires a subscription.
  • Fitbod writes each session automatically from your logged sets, your equipment and a 0 to 100% recovery score per muscle group. A chat assistant does that only when you ask.
  • Fitbod is the larger app: 4.8 from 286K US App Store ratings, plus Android, Apple Watch and Wear OS. Trunk is Apple-only with 1 rating.

Fitbod costs $15.99 a month or $95.99 a year after a 7-day trial (verified 2026-10-03 on Fitbod's FAQ). What that buys is an algorithm that writes every workout for you from your logged sets, your equipment and your muscle recovery, and ChatGPT cannot do that on its own because it keeps no training log and does not know what you lifted last week.

Whether Fitbod is worth it depends on how much of the planning you want done for you. If you want to open an app and find today's session already written, with the weights filled in, Fitbod does that and a chat assistant does not. If you are willing to ask for your plan, a general assistant can do most of the same thinking once it can read your real log. That setup costs $9.99 once, against $287.97 over 36 months on Fitbod's yearly plan or $575.64 paid monthly.

Disclosure: we make Trunk, the tracker behind that figure (App Store listing). Trunk's logger is free, with no cap on programs, days or exercises. Trunk+ is a $9.99 one-time purchase that lets ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini read your logged sets through a private link, and Trunk sells no subscription. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision, with no Android app and no Apple Watch app. It has no exercise library or demo videos, and no AI of its own, so nothing is planned for you unless you ask an assistant. It has one App Store rating. Fitbod is a far larger and more mature app, and this page says so.

How much does Fitbod cost?

Fitbod has no pricing page of its own. The prices appear on its FAQ, in two help center articles and on its web checkout, and all four agree.

Prices in USD, verified 2026-10-03. Monthly and yearly: Fitbod's FAQ, How to Subscribe to Fitbod and the web checkout. Duo and Family: Fitbod for Families and Fitbod's family plan post. Lifetime: Lifetime Membership FAQ. Trial: How the Trial Works. Fitbod's help center says prices may vary by region, promotion and platform.

Duo and Family are annual only, and each member keeps a separate account and history. With every seat used, that is about $80 per person per year on Duo and $72 on Family. Buying one does not cancel an individual subscription you already hold (source).

How the free trial works, and what happens when it ends

New users get seven days. To start the trial you choose the monthly or the yearly plan, and you are not charged until the seven days are up. If you do nothing, the trial becomes the paid plan you picked. On an iPhone, Fitbod's trial article says Apple needs the cancellation at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

If you cancel, you are not charged and you can still log in and look at past workouts. You lose workout generation, and logging a new workout requires a paid subscription. Fitbod has no free tier you can keep training on. The App Store calls it free with in-app purchases, which describes the download.

Is there a Fitbod lifetime plan?

Not one you can buy today. Fitbod's Lifetime Membership FAQ describes a membership limited to 1,000 purchases, usually sold during its Black Friday and Cyber Monday week, with the price listed as to be announced. It cannot be bought outside the sale, refunded or transferred. On 2026-10-03 the web checkout offered only the monthly, yearly and family plans.

The other Fitbod prices on the App Store

Fitbod's US App Store listing shows ten in-app purchase rows. On 2026-10-03 they included a Monthly Plan at both $12.99 and $15.99, A Year of Fitbod Elite at both $79.99 and $95.99, and six rows labelled legacy pricing. Apple's listing does not say which rows are offered to new subscribers. Fitbod's own pages all state $15.99 and $95.99, so those are the figures used here.

What does Fitbod cost over 12, 24 and 36 months?

Setup12 months24 months36 months
Fitbod, monthly plan$191.88$383.76$575.64
Fitbod, yearly plan$95.99$191.98$287.97
ChatGPT Free on its own$0$0$0
ChatGPT Plus on its own$240.00$480.00$720.00
Trunk+ plus an assistant you already have$9.99$9.99$9.99

USD. Fitbod at $15.99 a month and $95.99 a year, verified 2026-10-03 on Fitbod's FAQ. ChatGPT Free at $0 and Plus at $20 a month, verified 2026-10-03 on OpenAI's pricing page. Trunk+ at $9.99 one-time is our own price (App Store listing). Totals are our arithmetic, assume today's prices hold, and leave out Fitbod's 7-day trial.

ChatGPT Free on its own is the cheapest row, and it is missing the log. The Trunk row is $9.99 only because the assistant is one you already have, on a free tier or paid for other reasons. Claude's free plan and Gemini with a Google Account are also $0 (Claude, Gemini, verified 2026-10-03).

One caveat. If you would pay for ChatGPT Plus only to plan your training, the first year comes to $249.99 with Trunk+, and Fitbod's yearly plan is cheaper and does more of the work. Most people are not in that position: the free plans cost $0, and a paid assistant is usually bought for everything else it does. The rest of the category is priced in what AI fitness apps cost over 12 months.

What does Fitbod's algorithm actually do?

This is what the subscription pays for. Everything below comes from Fitbod's help center, which was updated on this subject in mid-September 2026, as read on 2026-10-03.

What it reads

Fitbod builds each workout from two things: the settings in your My Plan profile and the training you have already logged (How Fitbod Creates Your Workout). The profile holds your goal, experience level, equipment, training split and session length. Equipment is a hard filter: an exercise that needs something you have not listed will not be recommended.

How it picks exercises

Fitbod names five factors: how effective an exercise is for your goal, your equipment, how recovered each muscle group is, how much variety you asked for, and your feedback (source). It says the effectiveness ranking draws on more than 87 million logged workouts. You can tell it to recommend an exercise more often, less often or never, and every skip, swap and manual addition also shapes later sessions.

How it sets weight, sets and reps

Targets come from your logged performance. Finish a set comfortably and Fitbod raises the weight or reps over time. Struggle and it eases back. Return from a break and it lowers the weights (source). A system Fitbod calls mStrength varies intensity and volume between sessions, so a lighter day is part of the pattern.

After a set you can log Reps in Reserve on a scale from 0 to 4 or more. Fitbod also schedules a periodic Max Effort Day for an exercise, with two sets of as many reps as possible, to measure your strength again. New users start with conservative weights estimated from other users' logged workouts.

How it tracks recovery

Every muscle group carries a recovery percentage from 0 to 100, estimated from what you recently logged and shown as a heat map. Fitbod says full recovery typically takes up to seven days, and it builds the next workout around the fresher muscle groups. Connecting Apple Health or Health Connect lets activity recorded outside Fitbod count (source).

What happens without you asking

All of this runs with no prompt, and that is the real difference from a chat assistant. When you log a workout, or when a run arrives from a connected app, Fitbod regenerates your next recommended session (source).

What Fitbod calls AI

Fitbod's App Store subtitle is "AI Personal Trainer & Workouts", and the listing describes AI-generated workouts that learn from your edits. The help center calls the same system an algorithm. Neither the listing nor Fitbod's FAQ mentions ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or a chat assistant inside the app, and a help center search for ChatGPT returned no results on 2026-10-03. The human option is Ask a Trainer: certified trainers answer questions by email at no extra cost, though they do not write fully custom plans (source).

Can ChatGPT replace Fitbod on its own?

Partly. ChatGPT is good at the half of Fitbod's job that is thinking, and it has none of the half that is record keeping. It writes a full program from a brief, explains its choices and rewrites the plan when your week changes, and it does this on the Free plan ($0, verified 2026-10-03). Here is what it lacks:

  • A log. Nothing records the set you just did.
  • Dependable recall. OpenAI's help page says Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation (Memory in ChatGPT, read 2026-10-03). Chat memory is not a training history to plan loads from.
  • A check on its own numbers. Ask for last month's squat when the data is not in the conversation, and a language model can produce a figure that looks right and is invented.
  • Automatic progression. Fitbod raises a target because you logged the set. ChatGPT raises it only when you report what happened and ask.
  • A recovery model and demo videos.

So ChatGPT alone covers Fitbod's program writing and stops there. The gap is the log. The longer version is in can ChatGPT track my workouts.

Can you use ChatGPT together with Fitbod?

Only by hand. You can build a workout from scratch in Fitbod and save it, so a plan ChatGPT wrote can be typed in one session at a time. The help center also lists an Android-only option to import a workout from a photo or screenshot (source, read 2026-10-03).

How do you give ChatGPT your real training log?

There are three routes. They differ in how current the data is and which assistants they work with.

RouteWhat the assistant seesWorks withCost
Export a file and upload itYour history as of the exportAny assistant that accepts a fileFree where the tracker has an export
A tracker with a built-in connection (Hevy for ChatGPT)Your Hevy history, inside ChatGPTChatGPT only$0. Free Hevy accounts hold 4 routines; Hevy Pro is $2.99/mo, $23.99/yr or $74.99 one-time
A link the assistant opens (Trunk Connect AI)Your log as of the moment it opens the linkChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and anything else that opens a link$9.99 one-time (Trunk+)

USD. Hevy prices and the 4-routine cap verified 2026-10-03 on Hevy's pricing page; the integration's terms on Hevy's Hevy for ChatGPT page, same date. Trunk+ is our own price.

The first route needs a tracker with an export, and a file is a snapshot you re-upload whenever you want current numbers. We could not find an export documented in Fitbod's help center; a search there for CSV returned no results on 2026-10-03. Its privacy policy says you may request an electronic copy of your personal information.

The second route is the smoothest if ChatGPT is your assistant, and it is cheaper than Trunk: Hevy says a free Hevy account and a free ChatGPT account are enough. Setup is in how to connect Hevy to ChatGPT. The third route is ours.

Setting up Trunk Connect AI

  1. Open Trunk, go to Settings, tap the Trunk+ row and open Connect AI.
  2. Tap Generate Key, then Copy Prompt. The prompt carries a private link to your data and instructions for the assistant.
  3. Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or anything else that can open a web link. In Claude, switch on web search from the plus button first.
  4. The assistant opens the link and reads your logged sets: reps, weight, notes and date for every exercise.
  5. Ask for a program and the reply is a single import link. Tap it, check the program on the confirmation page, and tap Add to Trunk.
  6. Revoke Key kills the link whenever you want.

Nothing syncs: the assistant reads your log when you paste the prompt, so a new chat needs the prompt again. And the link works like a password. Anyone holding it can read your workout data until you revoke the key. More detail is in how to connect ChatGPT to a workout tracker.

What does a Fitbod-style week look like with your own assistant?

These prompts assume you have pasted the Trunk prompt into the chat, so the assistant has your log open.

1. Today's session, with targets

First quote back three sets from my log, with date, exercise,
weight and reps, so I know you read the real data.
Then find my last three Push sessions. For each exercise, give
me a target weight and reps for today and show the sets you
based it on. If I hit every rep last time, go up a little.
If I missed reps, hold the weight.

2. Lifts that have stalled

Go through every exercise in my log for the last eight weeks.
Which lifts have not gone up in weight or reps? List the sets
and dates that show it, then suggest one change for each.

3. Muscle groups that get too little work

Count my logged sets per muscle group per week for the last
four weeks. Which muscle groups get the least work? Name two
exercises I could add, using only equipment that already
appears in my log.

4. What to train when you are tired or short on time

Using the dates in my log, list when I last trained each
muscle group. My legs are still sore and I have 30 minutes.
Which session from my program makes the most sense today, and
what would you cut from it?

5. A new program for your equipment

Build me a four-day program for a home gym: barbell, rack,
bench, adjustable dumbbells and a pull-up bar. Keep the lifts
I already log where they fit. Send it as a Trunk import link
so I can add it to the app.

The first four are roughly what Fitbod does unprompted every time you open it. Here is what stays manual with this setup:

  • You paste the prompt at the start of each new chat, and you ask.
  • You carry the targets. The assistant can add a program's days and exercises to Trunk through a link you confirm. It never writes sets, reps or weights into the app. Its suggested numbers stay in the chat, and you log what you lifted.
  • You look up form elsewhere. Trunk has no demo videos.
  • You check its work. The assistant infers muscle groups and recovery from exercise names and dates, and it can misread a long log. That is why the first prompt asks it to quote your sets back.

Where does each one win?

Fitbod wins on

  • Zero-effort planning. A session is waiting when you open the app, with weights filled in.
  • Recovery tracking per muscle group that updates by itself.
  • Teaching. Fitbod says every exercise has a video demo and written cues.
  • Reach. Android, Apple Watch and Wear OS.
  • Track record. On the App Store since 2015, with 4.8 from 286K US ratings and Apple's Editors' Choice badge.

Trunk plus your own assistant wins on

  • Cost. $9.99 once, against $95.99 a year or $15.99 a month.
  • Free logging. Recording a workout never needs a subscription.
  • Conversation. You can ask why a lift stalled and argue with the answer.
  • Choice of assistant. ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, with the same prompt.
  • Your own program. Trunk records the plan you set up and does not change it.

Two honest concessions on the Trunk side. First, nothing happens unless you ask. No session is waiting for you, the assistant's target weights are not written into the app, and every new chat starts with a paste. If you know you will not do that, Fitbod is the better buy. Second, Trunk is new and Apple-only. It has no Android app, no Apple Watch app, no exercise library and no export button, and one App Store rating against Fitbod's 286,000.

Who should pick which?

Stay with Fitbod if

  • You want to be told what to do and never write a prompt.
  • You are new to lifting and need the demo videos.
  • You are on Android, or you log from a watch.
  • Two or more people at home would use it. Duo and Family bring the price per person down.
  • You are on an older, lower price. Fitbod says a legacy plan cannot be reinstated once cancelled (source).

ChatGPT on its own is enough if

  • You want a program written once, will track it on paper or in a notes app, and are fine typing your numbers in whenever you want advice.

Pick Trunk plus your own assistant if

  • You already use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and are comfortable asking for what you need.
  • You run your own program and mainly want a free logger, with analysis on request.
  • You do not want another subscription, and you train with an iPhone.

For that reader the numbers are plain: $9.99 once, against $287.97 over three years on Fitbod's yearly plan or $575.64 paid monthly, with the assistant working from every set you have logged.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Fitbod cost?

Fitbod costs $15.99 a month or $95.99 a year, which Fitbod puts at $8.00 a month. Fitbod Duo covers two people for $159.99 a year and Fitbod Family covers up to five for $359.99 a year. Prices are in USD, verified 2026-10-03 on Fitbod's FAQ, help center and family plan page, and Fitbod says they can vary by region and platform.

Is Fitbod free?

No. The app is free to download and new users get a 7-day trial, but starting the trial means choosing a monthly or yearly plan that begins when the trial ends. Without a subscription you can still view past workouts, and Fitbod's help center says logging new workouts requires a paid plan.

Is Fitbod worth it?

It is worth it if you want every session written for you with no prompting, including target weights, recovery tracking and demo videos. It is harder to justify if you already run your own program or are happy to ask an assistant, because a free logger plus the assistant you already have covers most of the thinking for far less. On the yearly plan Fitbod costs $287.97 over 36 months.

Can ChatGPT replace Fitbod?

On its own it replaces the program writing only. ChatGPT keeps no training log, does not track recovery, and does not raise your targets unless you report what you lifted and ask. Connected to a tracker that holds your real sets, it can cover most of the planning, but you still have to ask each time.

Does Fitbod use AI or ChatGPT?

Fitbod markets AI-generated workouts, and its own pages describe the system as a proprietary algorithm that learns from your logged reps, sets, fatigue and rest. Fitbod's App Store listing and FAQ do not mention ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and a search of its help center for ChatGPT returned no results on 2026-10-03.

Is there a Fitbod alternative with no subscription?

Yes. Trunk, which we make, has a free logger with no caps, and its $9.99 one-time Trunk+ purchase lets ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini read your logged sets. It is Apple-only and it does not build workouts automatically; you ask your assistant. Hevy is another route: its ChatGPT integration is free, and Hevy Pro has a $74.99 one-time option.

Does Fitbod have a lifetime membership?

Not one you can buy today. Fitbod's help center describes a Lifetime Membership limited to 1,000 purchases, usually sold during its Black Friday and Cyber Monday week, with the price listed as to be announced. On 2026-10-03 the web checkout offered only monthly, yearly and family plans.

What happens when the Fitbod free trial ends?

The trial converts to the monthly or yearly plan you chose and you are charged, unless you cancel first. On iPhone, Fitbod's help center says Apple needs the cancellation at least 24 hours before the trial ends. If you cancel, you can still view past workouts but cannot log new ones without a subscription.
